November 16-18

Seven members of the SSHS lab attended KSAS 2022 that was held at Jeju, from 16th to 18th November 2022. 

The presentation titles were as follow:

"Wing planform and flexibility effect on aerodynamic performance of flapping wings" by Reynolds Addo-Akoto, 양현호, 이상길, 한재흥.

"궤도상 서비스를 위한 포획 메커니즘 연구 동향" by 장건익, 한재흥.

"쌍안정성을 갖는 종이접기 기반 그리퍼 개념 설계" by 장건익, 한재흥.

"서보모터 구동식 조류모방형 날갯짓 비행체의 제작 및 비행 동역학 시뮬레이션" by 이은혁, 양현호, 한유정, 한재흥.

November 2-4

Three members of the SSHS lab attended KSNVE 2022 that was held at Jeju, from 2nd to 4th November 2022. 

The presentation titles were as follow:

"비행체 비행동특성 해석을 위한 다물체 동역학 프레임워크" by 한재흥, 양현호, 이상길.

"초저고도 광학위성 본체 구조모델 개발" by 김태현, 장건익, 신희준, 윤효상, 한재흥.

"고토크 CMG용 Hexapod형 진동절연장치의 성능 평가" by 정바울, 이승찬, 한재흥.

October 8

Dr. Reynolds Addo-Akoto, a postdoc researcher and alumnus of the SSHS Lab, was a recipient of the Creative Research Award given by the Alumni Association of the KAIST Aerospace Engineering department. This award was given during the 2022 Air and Space programme on the 8th of October.

October 11-15

Four members of the SSHS lab attended APISAT 2022 that was held in Niigata, Japan, from 11th to 15th October 2022. 

The presentation titles were as follow:

"Comparison of coupled loads analysis of a launch vehicle in accordance with component mode synthesis methods" by Seung-Chan Lee, Ba-woul Chang, Jin-Gyun Kim, and Jae-Hung Han.

"Design and deployment analysis of origami-based truncated conical shape" by Keon-Ik Jang, Tae-Hyun Kim, and Jae-Hung Han.

"Optimal design and analysis of twist-coupled flapping mechanism" by Yu-Jeong Han, Hyeon-Ho Yang, Sang-Gil Lee, and Jae-Hung Han.

"Effect of aspect ratio on aerodynamic performance of negatively twisted flapping-wings" by Reynolds Addo-Akoto, Jong-Seob Han, and Jae-Hung Han.

September 18-22

Two members of the SSHS lab, Chung Bawoul and Lee Seung Chan, attended and made a presentation at the 73rd International Astronautical Congress (IAC), Paris, France from 18th to 22nd September 2022. The presentation title was: "Design and Performance Test of Hexapod Micro-vibration Isolator for High Torque CMG" by Chung Bawoul, Lee Seung Chan, and Han Jae-Hung.

September 4-9

Hyeon-Ho Yang and Sang-Gil Lee attended the ICAS (International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences) Congress. (4–9 Setember 2022 at Stockholm, Sweden)

August 26

Three members of the SSHS Lab defended their masters thesis (proposal) on 2022/08/26 with the following titles: 

"Study of deployable heatshield for Mars exploration" by Keon-Ik Jang 

"Coupled load analysis with experimentally corrected enhanced Craig-Bampton model" by SeungChan Lee 

"Development of twist coupled flapping mechanism for bird-inspired flapping wing air vehicles" by Yujeong Han Wishing them all the best as they prepare towards their final defense!!!

August 17-19

Unmanned system World Congress (UWC, 무인이동체산업엑스포) was held from 17th to 19th August. The system H/W research group, supervised by Prof. Han, exhibited their hardware.

August 17-20

Two professors from Virginia Tech, Profs. Rolf Mueller and Alexander Leonessa, paid a 4-day (08/17-20) visit to the SSHS Lab. They held seminars on their respective research areas of flying bats and humanoid robots. Further discussions were made on designing and building bioinspired hardwares.

Dr. Jaeyong Choi (former student at SSHS Lab., KAIST) has been appointed as Assistant Professor at AI-Software Dep., Gachon University. Congratulation

Tae-Hyun Kim and Keon-Ik Jang attended the SPIE. Astronomical Telescopes+Instrumentation. (17–22 July 2022 at Montréal, Québec, Canada)

Members of the SSHS Lab and the director, Prof. Han, attended the KSAS Structure Summer Workshop at Inha University, Incheon, from 20th to 21st July, 2022.

Bawoul Chung received the excellent presentation award at the 2022 KSNVE Spring Conference. Title: Performance test of bellows micro-vibration isolator

Members and alumni of the SSHS lab had a teacher's day celebration to appreciate Prof. Han, the director of the lab, on 13th May 2022. Farewell speeches were also given by Dr. J.-E Suh, an alumni, and Li Jipeng, an exchange student. Wishing them all the best in their next phase of life!!!

Members and Director of the SSHS lab welcomed the spring season with strawberry party at the rooftop in N7-5 building.

Dr. Jong-Eun Suh received PhD Dissertation Award at the College of engineering for the 2nd semester of 2021. Dissertation title: A Study on the Origami-based Reconfigurable Tubular Structure

March 6-9

Yong-Ha Hwang and Tae-Hyun Kim attended the SPIE Smart Structures + Nondestructive Evaluation 2022 Conference held at Long Beach, California, USA from March 6th to 9th. They presented on the following titles: Energy-Absorbing Origami Structure for Crashworthiness Design by Leonardo Marconi, Yong-Ha Hwang, Jae-Hung Han, Giacomo Frulla, and Enrico Cestino. A Unit-separable Earth Observation CubeSat Structure Concept Using Flat-retractable Truss Structure by Tae-Hyun Kim, Ali Alzaabi, Jong-Eun Suh, and Jae-Hung Han.

Five members of the SSHS lab had a graduation ceremony on Feb.18 at KAIST. The members were Kailash (Ph.D.), Jong-Eun (Ph.D.), Andrew (Ph.D.), and Sang-Gil (M.S.) !! Congratulations on your well-deserved success!!! Best wishes in all your endeavors!!

Our Lab attended 2022 KSAS - Structures and Materials Summer Workshop (online) on 2022/ 02/ 15. Prof. Han gave the opening speech and Dr. Suh gave a presentation titled "종이접기 기반의 가변 형상 튜브 구조에 관한 연구"

January 28 

Junghwan Park participated in the 2021 AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) Region VII Student Conference (November 2021 Melbourne/virtual, Australia). He received an award in the Masters Category 3 of the conference with the presentation title, “A Perception and Control System for In-Flight Collision Avoidance of UAVs”.

January 17 

Dr. -Ing. Jong-Seob Han, a senior research scientist at Technical University of Munich, Germany, was invited to the SSHS lab to give a seminar on the title "Leading-Edge Vortex of Flapping Wings in Freestream".

Prof. Jae-Hung Han has been appointed as the executive director of the KAIST Development Foundation from January 12, 2022.
